The church is mentioned since 988 as being the chapel of a convent of women.

In 1230 it witnessed a miracle (the priest found the chalice intended for the Eucharist full of blood). Following this event and in front of the popular fervor, the church was enlarged in the gothic style with a single nave.

From the 13th to the 17th century it was widely embellished by many painters - see the Madonna with Child and Saints by Lorenzo di Bicci and a Madonna in Majesty by Matteo di Pacino. In the Chapel of the Miracle the beautiful tabernacle by Mino da Fiesole contains the miraculous chalice. The fresco is by Cosimo Rosselli.
